Foreign Minister Lajčák comments protests in Poland

"We are carefully observing and evaluating the situation in Poland and I do not hide the fact that there are many questions which need to be answered," said Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák in reaction to the recent protests in Poland. Last weekend, thousands of Poles in several Polish cities and towns called on their President Andrzej Duda to veto changes in the justice system approved by Beata Szydło's single-party government. Later, on Monday, TASR wrote that Duda would not support the changes and would veto them. The reform is viewed as controversial even by the EU. German Justice Minister Heiko Maas said on Sunday that these changes would endanger the independence of the justice system in Poland and if they were approved, he would welcome sanctions against Poland.
