"I expect Education, Science, Research and Sport Minister Peter Plavčan (a Slovak National Party/SNS nominee) to take a stance very, very soon on the division of EU funds for strategic research and development," said President Andrej Kiska during his visit to the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) on Wednesday. He was speaking after it emerged that, to the chagrin of the Slovak scientific community, Slovak universities and the academy were not allocated any money from nearly €300 million in a recent call for proposals towards research. In contrast, private companies were successful in the competition. Academy's chairman Pavol Šajgalík said that the issue was the subject of a debate involving the minister, the Research Agency, university rectors and the academy. "Everything remains open, but I suppose that an agreement will be made," he said.
