The busy I/18 road running below Strečno Castle (Žilina region) that connects Martin and Žilina was shut down without prior notification on Sunday following concerns that a 50-tonne section of rock could tumble off the cliff on which the castle ruins stand. The road, which is also part of the main transport corridor to northern and eastern Slovakia is expected to remain closed until July 30. The closure also applies to cyclists and pedestrians, and the site is under constant surveillance by patrolling police officers. The road blockage can be bypassed trough Terchová, however, motorists driving east are advised to take the R1 road via Nitra and Banská Bystrica.
