Slovakia reacts to criticism regarding primeval forests

Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák has asked Environment Minister László Sólymos to issue a report for UNESCO on measures introduced to improve the protection of Carpathian beech primeval forests, reported SITA on Sunday. Recently, UNESCO strongly criticized Slovakia for insufficient protection in this rare area pointing to the main problems: logging, hunting and the lack of a maintenance plan. According to Lajčák, the situation cannot be solved by one decision or ordinance. He expressed his belief that neither the Foreign Ministry, nor UNESCO can ban logging in the area. As Lajčák said, he will coordinate a solution to the current problems to the extent that his competences allow.
