New Honorary Consulate opens in Croatia

Slovak President Andrej Kiska opened Slovakia's Honorary Consulate in Split, Croatia, on Wednesday. "I'm happy that one of the most visited destinations for Slovak tourists now includes a piece of Slovakia. We have a place where anybody who needs help can get it at any time," said Kiska during the opening ceremony. That said, the president hopes that the new office will receive as few requests for assistance as possible. In addition to an embassy in Zagreb, Slovakia also has another honorary consulate in Osijek. While visiting Croatia, the Slovak president also unveiled a bust of Slovak author and journalist Martin Kukučín (1860-1928) in the village of Selca on the island of Brač. Kukučín, who is often touted as the founder of modern Slovak prose writing, lived in Croatia for more than 13 years and worked there as a doctor.
