The American Chamber of Commerce in Slovakia has asked Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič not to sign the amendment to the law on collective bargaining, which, in their opinion, extends higher-level collective agreements for all companies within a certain sector without the consent of the affected companies.
In the open letter addressed to the President the Chamber’s representatives argued that the law infringes the principle of freedom in agreement-making. It adds that Slovakia is an attractive destination for companies that aren't active in traditional industries but to those such as IT that are organised in a different way, based on individual contracts. The Labour Ministry, which has authored the bill, is convinced that the amendment will contribute towards improvements both in working conditions and in business competition in Slovakia.
