Vladimír Mečiar speaks about the amnesties

The so-called Mečiar's amnesties are still valid, according to former Prime Minister Vladimír Mečiar, who granted them back in 1998. Speaking in public for the first time since the Constitutional Court ruled in late May that the amnesties can be scrapped, Mečiar stated on RTVS's Saturday politics programme that the abrogation of the amnesties was unconstitutional and that it was a huge historical mistake. He also added that he now expects the issue to be dealt with by international institutions. Mečiar's amnesties relate to the kidnapping of then president Michal Kováč's son and the murder in 1996 of Róbert Remiáš, who served as a contact for a key witness of the abduction. The amnesties also concern a thwarted referendum of 1997.
