Prosecutor finds new evidence in Gorilla scandal; will quit his job

Special Prosecutor Dušan Kováčik stated to the parliamentary defence committee on Tuesday (6-6) that fresh new evidence has emerged in the Gorilla case, for which prosecutions will probably begin. Kováčik firmly believes that the Gorilla investigation will be completed. "I want to draw at least this thing to an end," he said. At the committee meeting he added that he will not stay in office for the full term of his employment, blaming immense pressure following Monday's (5-5) public anti-corruption protest march demanding his dismissal, along with Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák (Smer-SD). Kováčik finds it naive to think that dismissing one person would resolve the problem of corruption. "It doesn't work like this. Corruption isn't about one person," he said. Kováčik said he has been thinking about the students' demands every day. "I don't take it lightly, I respect all citizens, but I'm sorry that it only comes from one side. I'm still open to a meeting," he said. Prosecutor-General Jaromír Čižnár told journalists in Parliament earlier that day that he would respect it if Kováčik did step down.
