Slovak sculptor Jozef Jankovič dies, age 79

The renowned Slovak sculptor and graphic artist Jozef Jankovič, one of the most prominent representatives of Slovak fine art, died on Tuesday morning at the age of 79, following a heart attack. SITA was informed on this through his friend; aesthetician and philosopher Peter Michalovič, who was the curator of many of his exhibitions. Jankovič, according to Denník N, had been preparing a large exhibition in Olomouc on the occasion of his eightieth birthday in autumn. In 1964, architect Dušan Kuzma invited him to cooperate on the Slovak National Uprising memorial project in Banská Bystrica. Jankovič created the memorial monument The Victims Warn which was solemnly revealed in 1969. From 1970, Jankovič was forbidden from exhibiting his work and galleries were banned from buying his works. After 1989, he worked as a member of the Federal Assembly in Prague and from 1990 to 1994 he worked as a rector of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava.
