Four out of ten Slovaks claim that they would most probably report corruption practices to police if they find out about them, according to survey done by the Focus Agency for the watchdog Transparency International Slovensko in the first week of April this year. This has been the highest percentage since 2002 when Transparency International began measuring the involvement of citizens in the fight against corruption. Back then only 17% of citizens would have done so. Still, most citizens (51%) stated they would not report corruption practices at all. The authors of the survey admit they have no clear explanations for these figures and suggest a combination of factors including the level of trust in police and widely publicized examples of whistle-blowers.
