New members elected to Judicial Council

Slovak judges elected from among themselves eight members of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic, who will represent them for the next five years. Judges have nine representatives in an 18-strong Council. Among the 1,195 voting judges, Miloš Kolek from the Regional Court in Prešov won the highest support. Other elected members are Lenka Praženková, Erika Zajacová, Martin Michalanský, Marcela Kosová, Ján Burik, Pavol Pilek and Daniel Hudák. All eight successful candidates were nominated by the Slovak Judges Association; conversely, none of the candidates proposed by the reformist "For Open Justice" organisation made it through. According to Judicial Council chair Jana Bajánková, the election results confirmed the significance of regional self-governments in the judiciary. Six out of the eight elected judges come from regional courts.
