Bratislava Cemeteries Filling up Fast

Bratislava is facing a city-wide shortage of new burial spaces, with less than 2000 spaces available at this moment. This follows from a document that was submitted for debate of the city's council in October. One Bratislava funeral service provider Marianum needs room to bury 400-600 dead people annually.

Consequently, the city may well run out of burial space in three to five years. Bratislava may find some extra space by re-using burial sites which have expired leases. Marianum even began to place yellow or orange stickers on 7,800 such graves across Bratislava in an effort to remind relatives to pay up or else the sites may be re-used. According to Marianum, this could free up some 4,000 spaces but families tend to decline the option of a previously used space following their non-payment.
