Parliament is expected to approve the sending of military police to the Mediterranean today as part of the European Union Naval Force Mediterranean (EUNAVFOR Med) joint action plan. The purpose of the combined mission, also known as Operation Sophia, is to identify, capture and destroy vessels and assets used by migrant smugglers or human traffickers. If the deputies approve, an intervention team of up to ten soldiers is expected to take part in the operation, with Slovakia planning to send soldiers for two six-month rotations. The Slovak military police will serve on a warship patrolling the southern Mediterranean Sea, operating under a German flag.
