Young Slovaks are among those Europeans who stay living with their parents for the longest period. According to the latest results from Eurostat, the quickest to leave their family nests are young people from Scandinavian countries. Based on data collected in 2015, the average age for leaving the parental home in the EU is 26.1. However, there are enormous differences across the 28 European member states. While young Swedes start gaining independence around 19 years of age, in Croatia, young people tend to stay living with their parents till they are on average 31.4 years old. For Slovakia, the average age is 30.9, which makes it the third country with the longest time of living in a shared household. The Eurostat survey, however, does not say anything about the causes of this situation within individual EU countries.
