On Monday, President Andrej Kiska signed amendments to the constitution giving parliament the right to annul the president's unlawful amnesties. Once the change to the constitution is officially published, MPs will be able to annul the controversial Mečiar amnesties. "I want to praise MPs that, despite various disagreements, they reached the conclusion that it really is necessary to change the constitution. I also want to praise the great support from the public, experts and all those who helped create nationwide pressure on this topic," said Kiska. In 1998, Vladimír Mečiar, Prime Minister and acting president at the time, signed amnesties thus stopping investigations into two cases: the kidnapping of the son of the former president Michal Kováč, and a thwarted referendum.
