Corruption is in the highest places, says Prime Minister

Slovak Attorney General Jaromír Čižnár and Prime Minister Robert Fico agreed that the fight against corruption in Slovakia is proving insufficient, with both calling for the strengthening of the protection of corruption whistle-blowers. At a press conference at hotel Bôrik, Fico announced that the government is preparing a proposal for a completely new law to protect whistle-blowers who report on instances of corruption. Fico admitted that corruption is a part of public life in Slovakia, but a lack of relevant information on the subject hinders it from being solved. "The fight against corruption is effective only when we have enough information," said the prime minister. "We are preparing a completely new law on protecting the notifiers of such crimes," said Fico, adding that people should be scared of being caught. Opposition OĽaNO-NOVA party leader Igor Matovič responded to the announcement stating that Fico is in no position to speak against corrupt practices. "Robert Fico is the epitome of corruption. Robert Fico lives in what is the symbol of corruption [meaning his apartment, owned by tax fraud suspect Ladislav Bašternák] and, with his entire person and his existence, Robert Fico encapsulates corruption. He's been doing that long term, and so he has no moral right to preach about the struggle against corruption," said Matovič.
