A centre for teaching the Slovak language will be set up in the U.S.A., as Education Minister Dušan Čaplovič on Thursday signed a Memorandum on Co-operation between the Slovak Education, Science, Research and Sports Ministry and the California University of Pennsylvania, says the ministry's web site.
Providing an online study programme for Slovak, the project is designed mainly for companies and organisations with business contacts in Slovakia such as, for instance, U.S. Steel, individuals, and applicants for Slovak university studies as well as organisations in western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and western Virginia. According to the ministry, there are 1.2 million people living in U.S.A. who claim Slovak nationality. Most of them live in Pennsylvania (especially in Pittsburgh) and Ohio, with a smaller group in New Jersey. The online courses are created and run by Studia Academica Slovaca, a part of Comenius University's Faculty of Philosophy focusing on Slovak for foreign students. The California University of Pennsylvania will serve as the American partner in the project, providing marketing, the assigning of potential students to courses and related services.
