Opposition MPs Igor Matovič and Jozef Mihál will both be stripped of half their monthly salary and the lump sum reimbursements for other costs related to their posts. Parliamentary Chairman Andrej Danko took this decision following their absence in Parliament last month.
No such sanction has been imposed in Parliament for years. In his official statement, Danko noted that even though Matovič submitted a written apology for his absence at a parliamentary session on February 1, he did not consider Matovič's reasons to be serious enough. Mihál, meanwhile, provided no written apology for his three-day absence from Parliament in early February. Matovič feels no guilt and sees Danko's decision to fine him as a display of bullying. According to Matovič, Danko employs double standards because he travelled to Madrid in February to watch a football match and failed to excuse himself.
