On Thursday, Prime Minister Robert Fico will take part in a meeting of the European Council in Brussels, where the main topics of the discussion are to be employment, security and migration. Ahead of the summit, Robert Fico announced that he also plans to open up the issue of the dual-quality of foodstuffs, discussed previously within the Visegrad Group countries. In addition to this, European leaders should also elect today the new President of the European Council, with publicized wide support for re-electing the incumbent European Council president, Donald Tusk. However, if the Polish Government succeeds in postponing the European Council presidential election until another EU summit, Donald Tusk might not be re-elected, stated Robert Fico at the parliamentary European affairs committee on Wednesday.
In addition to talks on the re-election of the current EU Council president, Donald Tusk, that should take place at Thursday's summit in Brussels, the co-governing Slovak National Party (SNS) on Wednesday rejected Prime Minister Robert Fico's statement about Slovakia's support for Donald Tusk. According to Parliamentary Chairman and SNS head Andrej Danko, Slovakia is a partner within the Visegrad Group, and therefore it is Slovakia's duty to respect the candidate of the Polish Government, MEP Jacek Saryusz-Wolski.
