PM Fico laments how Mečiar amnesties could be revoked

Parliament could revoke the controversial Mečiar amnesties if the Constitutional Court decides that the lawmakers have the right to do so, said Prime Minister Robert Fico in a video on his social media profile. "Let's not do something which the constitution does not allow," said Fico adding that he finds the amnesties immoral. In 1998, Mečiar, acting president at the time, stopped the investigation into two cases: the kidnapping of the son of the former president Michal Kováč, and a thwarted referendum. Slovakia's parliament should decide on their revocation this month.Apart from the two governing SMER-SD party and Slovak National Party, all other parliamentary parties including the governing Most-Híd are in favour of their revocation. However, they do not have the necessary 90 out of 150 votes. In January 2017, some of Slovakia's leading lawyers issued a statement that the revocation of the amnesties would be legitimate.
