European Commission’s report rather favourable for Slovakia

The latest 2017 European Semester report from the European Commission turns out to be favourable for Slovakia. According to the Commission, Slovakia's economic results are good but they do not factor in key areas for the life of people. The Commission's report notes that Slovakia's economy is growing at one of the fastest rates in the EU, with real GDP growth expected to top 3% after 3.3% in 2016. The labour market has also seen a cyclical improvement. However, even though Slovakia's economy is highly integrated into global value chains, production is concentrated in only a few sectors and regions. As far as the country's public administration is concerned, the report appreciates its modernisation, yet it concludes that corruption still remains a challenge. In the next few weeks, the report will be the subject of consultations with member countries. This will result in country-specific recommendations that the European Commission will release in May.
