Vote on Mečiar amnesties postponed to March

Deliberations on a proposal to abrogate the amnesties of former Prime Minister Vladimir Mečiar (1993-98) will be postponed to the next parliamentary session slated for March. Parliament accommodated the request of the submitter, Opposition MP Ján Budaj (OĽaNO-NOVA), who stated he would like to give time for coalition parties Smer-SD and the Slovak National Party (SNS) to form an educated opinion on the topic. Unlike Smer-SD and SNS, the Opposition MP is convinced that Mečiar's amnesties can be legally scrapped. Mečiar's amnesties relate both to the 1995 kidnapping of then President Michal Kováč's son, and the murder of Róbert Remiáš, who served as a contact for a key witness of the abduction.
