On February 2, Slovakia commemorates the World Wetlands Day. This date marks the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands, the so called Ramsar Convention signed in 1971, which provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. They affect the microclimate; moreover they perform an invaluable role in the hydrological cycle. In Slovakia there are 14 wetlands of international importance on an area of almost 41,000 hectares.
