Bratislava workers without local residence must pay additional tax

A new measure has been introduced in Bratislava, the capital city of Slovakia, imposing a tax on the tens of thousands of people from different parts of Slovakia who work in the capital but don't have permanent residence in Bratislava. This was reported by the Pravda daily on Tuesday. As of January 2017, these people will have to pay a tax of €1.70 for every night they spend in a hostel or a boarding house. The city will thus collect through this tax for accommodation around €50 per person per month. Until the end of 2016, people working in Bratislava but not claiming permanent residence there were able to avoid the tax by asking for temporary residence in the capital. However, this exemption has been scrapped since January 1, 2017 and the city's authorities have increased the tax for accommodation from €1.65 to €1.70, writes the daily. It's estimated that around 300,000 people from different parts of Slovakia work and study in the capital.
