Hungary takes over the Malinová case

The SME daily informed that Hungary will take over the criminal prosecution of the former student Hedviga Žáková Malinová. According to Slovak prosecutors, she made up an anti-Hungarian hate attack by unknown assailants that she claimed to have been the victim of in 2006. The case started soon after Robert Fico began his first term as prime minister. Malinová told the police that she had been beaten up by a couple of skinheads while speaking on the phone in Hungarian. The skinheads allegedly wrote anti-Hungarian slogans on her T-shirt too. Several months later, the Slovak police closed their investigation of the case with the verdict that Malinová had made up the whole story. A prosecution against her for lying under oath was opened in May 2007. Hedviga Žáková Malinová appealed to the European court for human rights due to flaws in the investigation of the case. During the government of Iveta Radičová, an agreement was reached: the cabinet apologised to her and Malinová waived any claim to financial compensation. However, when Robert Fico returned to government, the case against Malinová was reopened.
