Austria plans to reinforce security on its side of the Austria - Slovakia border due to rising numbers of detainees in the region of Lower Austria. In the first two weeks of 2017, 299 refugees were detained in the areas bordering Slovakia. According to the Austrian Defense Minister Hans Peter Doskozil, people smugglers are making more use of the route through Slovakia. Another problematic spot is the Tyrolean Brenner Pass between Italy and Austria, where 292 illegal migrants were detained in the past three weeks.
