Online shopping saw a significant rise in the purchasing of Christmas gifts in Slovakia, however, paying with cards remains the most dominant payment type said Andrea Siposová, director of VUB bank's card products department. As she said, in the pre-Christmas period the number of online transactions doubled and even tripled on some internet sites when compared to other months. The most sought after gifts were electronics, sports equipment, books and toys - purchased in most cases with debit cards. "We recorded a rise in card payments particularly in the final weeks of the year. The most intense period in terms of shopping was December 20-22, when card use was ratcheted up," said Siposová.
