The bill for the state’s dispute with the owner of the private health insurer Union climbed to over €41.5 million as of late September. This is a dispute related to the ban on health insurers retaining their profits issued by Robert Fico’s first government in the period 2006- 2010.This amount includes legal costs and reimbursement, which the arbitration tribunal adjudged to the health insurance company Union’s stockholder the Dutch company Achmea. As the Hospodarske Noviny daily brought on Tuesday, the German Federal Court of Justice ruled against Slovakia's appeal on the matter of the arbitration court ruling from 2012 obliging Slovakia to pay €25 million in compensation to the Dutch company Achmea. The dispute with Achmea is not at all as black for Slovakia as it is painted, stated Finance Minister Peter Kažimír, claiming that Slovakia is currently in "the jungle of judicial procedures". Kažimír added that there might be some more surprises to come in this case. Slovakia is now waiting for a decision from the Higher Regional Court of Frankfurt, which should deal with Achmea's compensation claim.
