Representatives of EU-member states have approved an amendment to the regulation on mechanisms that will make it easier for member states to suspend visa waiver agreements, Slovak Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák told TASR news agency. The wording of the regulation is a compromise that emerged from negotiations with the European Parliament "By achieving this agreement, the Slovak Presidency of the Council of the EU is bringing results for one of its priorities," Kaliňák said.
The main goal of the aforementioned regulation is to strengthen the visa waiver suspension mechanism. This will make it easier for EU-member states to highlight circumstances that might call for suspension and enable the European Commission to launch this mechanism based on its own initiative. A call to activate the mechanism can be made either by a member state or the EC.
