Alcohol and cigarettes won't make heroes out of you, as they embarrass you and harm your health instead. This is the message to be conveyed by a campaign from the League Against Cancer (LPR) that is to run from next week.
As part of the annual 'Week Against Cancer' campaign, which will run 21-25 October, posters targeting children and young people aged 11-25 will be displayed in buses and elsewhere across the country. They will show their favourite superheroes such as Superman, Batman and Catwoman, who find themselves in delicate situations after heavy partying and consequently turn into "super-zeroes". According to LPR Chief Eva Siracka, the number of girls who smoke is on the increase. At the same time, the age when children first indulge in smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol keeps dropping. The campaign will peak on Friday, 25 October, when the 15th annual 'Day of Apples' will take place. As part of the event, which will urge youth to 'replace a cigarette with an apple', volunteers will hand out apples to young people in 14 cities and towns across Slovakia. Bratislava's Eurovea shopping mall will, later in the day, see a range events for youth featuring singers, dancers, world karate champion Roman Volak and boxer Tomi 'Kid' Kovacs.
