Slovakia supports NATO move to stabilise Afghanistan

Slovakia will support the joint effort by NATO and its allies to stabilise Afghanistan until the moment there are clear guarantees that the country can manage its security on its own, said Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák on the final day of two-day talks among NATO diplomacy chiefs in Brussels.

Lajcak stressed that NATO has invested a lot of resources into Afghanistan and the country is different than it was back in 2001 before the US attack. "It would not be responsible to leave now. This is because we have no guarantees that the positive changes in place are irreversible and, therefore, our presence will continue. No one challenges the plan that we'll stay there as long as necessary," claimed Lajčák.

Lajčák pointed out that the nature of the NATO mission in Afghanistan was subject to two changes over the course of the past three years. Nowadays, representatives of the alliance secure training, aid and support for domestic security forces.
