The Broadcasting Council has granted the first license for a nationwide television network addressed to ethnic Hungarian communities. The service is to be launched by the private company Kabel Telekom in Lučenec.
The TV network is to broadcast 24 hours a day. Most of the airtime will be taken up by current affairs programming and features. No movies or entertainment shows will be produced.
In addition to Slovakia, the station is planning to acquire distribution in Hungary, Serbia and Romania.
Up to half a million Slovak citizens declare themselves as being of Hungarian origin or possessing a working command of the language.
