Puppet theatre in Slovakia and the Czech Republic has been added to the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of humanity by UNESCO. It was one of the 12 elements added to the list at a meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Thursday and Friday. According to Juraj Hamar, chairman of the Council for the Protection of Traditional Folk Culture, the UNESCO body praised the unity of drama, staging, scenographic, visual artistic and musical skills in the art of puppetry. As he added, this tradition in both countries is especially strong.
