If the information about not building the Nord Stream 2 gas pipe line is confirmed, it would mean that transport of natural gas from Russia to the EU through Ukraine and Slovakia would continue even after 2019, said Slovak Maroš Šefčovič, Vice-President of the European Commission. "We, the EU, are united in the opinion that [gas] transport through Ukraine has strategic importance for the energy security of the entire Union. No one can persuade me that one or two routes are better than three," commented Šefčovič on the possibility of stopping transport via Ukraine and Slovakia. Nord Stream 2 is a planned twin pipeline system that should transport natural gas from the world's largest reserves in Northern Russia to Europe via the Baltic Sea.
