The opposition reacted with mockery to the news on Thursday that the Finance Ministry plans to reduce the corporate income tax rate by one percentage point to 22 percent, after previously raising it from 19 percent to 23 percent. “We have been saying for a year and a half in parliament that it is a gross mistake to raise the corporate income tax rate.
The government turned a deaf ear to us and a year ago it implemented this drastic change. Now it admits that it has erred but wants to fix its mistake only by a facelift. It is maybe because presidential elections are coming,” opposition SDKU-DS Deputy Chairman Ivan Štefanec told journalists on Thursday. KDH Chairman Jan Figeľ agrees with Štefanec. “The government confirms with its move that its recent decision to raise the company tax by 4 percentage points was a mistake. The government of SMER also confirms that the presidential elections are coming,” he said. Though opposition politicians hail the announced cut in the corporate tax rate, they consider it insufficient.
