Mečiar amnesties may be condemned by parliament

Rather than cancelling of the so-called Mečiar amnesties, the parliament might instead adopt a declaration, in which it would morally condemn the decision of former Prime Minister Vladimír Mečiar, suggested Prime Minister Robert Fico. In 1998 Mečiar, as acting president, stopped the investigation of two cases: the kidnapping of the son of former president Michal Kováč, and a thwarted referendum. The prime minister admits that the amnesties are irrevocable, in spite of the fact that they are a "moral basement". According to several MPs, such declarations would not solve anything, as the guilty would not be punished.
