No deaths on Slovak roads on EDWARD day

The European Traffic Police Network (TISPOL) and the European Commission on Tuesday released the results of the first European Day Without a Road Death (EDWARD), which took place on September 21, when no road fatalities were recorded in 19 European countries. On EDWARD Day itself, there were 43 road deaths in another 12 European countries, compared to 70 fatalities in the total of 31 countries on the same day in 2015. There were no road fatalities in Slovakia on the same day both in 2015 and 2016. "Education and awareness make important contributions to road safety, and Project EDWARD sets an extremely ambitious target: to achieve a day without a single death on Europe's roads. This year, we recorded a significant improvement compared to 2015, which shows that when all stakeholders come together, we can really make an impact and save lives. We're on the right path to make the aspirational goal of zero fatalities a reality," said European Commissioner for Transport Violeta Bulc. According to TISPOL, the annual numbers of road deaths in Slovakia have fallen significantly since 2008, with the lowest figure recorded in 2013.

Numbers of road deaths in Slovakia:

2008: 666

2009: 385

2010: 353

2011: 328

2012: 352

2013: 251

2014: 259
