Water usage falling in Slovakia

Slovaks are using less and less water every year, the Hospodárske Noviny daily reported on Tuesday. While each Slovak consumed a little over 83 litres per day on average in 2010, this number had dropped to only 77.3 litres in 2015. This figure is even below the limit of the hygienic minimum, which hovers at around 80 litres per person per day. For comparison, the United States Environmental Protection Agency reports that, at present, the average U.S. citizen consumes 378 litres (100 US gallons) per day. This decrease in Slovak consumption doesn't necessarily stem from a greater consciousness of conservation, however. The price of water, especially in the east of Slovakia, could also be the cause. People from smaller villages are refusing to pay €1.57 per cubic metre of water; that being the price that the water company Východoslovenská vodárenská spoločnosť charges. Such individuals prefer to pump water from their own wells.
