The Transport, Construction and Regional Development Ministry has given up on its plan involving the provision of extra payments to accommodation facilities for attracting visitors from countries that require visas. The original plan was designed so that accommodation facilities which would attract visitors from countries that require visas to enter Slovakia for at least five nights would receive extra payments from the state as of 2014.
The overall cost incurred in this initiative was projected to reach €2.1 million in 2014. “As it has emerged from negotiations on next year's budget, the strained public finances aren’t able to allow the allocation of funds required for these subsidies. This means that in 2014 there'll be no subsidies towards the support of stays for tourists requiring visas,” said ministry spokesman Martin Kona. However, he added that the ministry is planning to revisit the idea when circumstances allow.
