Slovak honey production down in 2016

Overall production of honey in Slovakia in 2016 fell by half compared to last year. The reason behind the loss is unfavourable weather. "A significant drop of temperature in spring caused decrease in flower honey production and excessive rain as well as frost influenced forest honey production," said the chair of the Institute of Apiculture Tatiana Čermáková. However, drops were not recorded across the whole of Slovakia, with there being significant differences between the regions. Despite the downturn in production, the decreased incomes of beekeepers should not necessarily result in increased prices of honey. As Čermáková explained, the decisive factor is buying power in particular regions.
