The EU will ask Slovakia to provide 35 police officers to protect the EU border, said Berndt Körner, the Deputy Executive Director of the Frontex EU external border protection agency, on Monday. As Körner explained, the Slovak formation will only operate as a support unit, not a permanent one. The newly introduced measures stem from an extension of Frontex's responsibilities approved by the EU Council last week. Thus, the agency will cooperate on the creation of the European Border and Coast Guard. Körner also commented on the situation at the Slovak-Ukrainian section of the EU border, which is, as he said "very, very calm".
