Slovak Canoeist Matej Beňuš won silver medal in men's canoe single discipline at the 2016 Summer Olympics on Tuesday. Thus, he is the first Slovak to win a medal in Rio de Janeiro. Beňuš's final time was 95.02 seconds. He finished 0.85 seconds behind the French Denis Gargaud Chanut and 2.24 seconds ahead of the third Japanese Takuya Haneda. With his win, Matej Beňuš continues the tradition of successful Slovak canoeists, who have been collecting medals since the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. At these games Slovakia competed as an independent country for the first time.
