A memorial to remember the victims of the Iron Curtain was unveiled in the Bratislava borough of Petržalka on Tuesday. The ceremony was held on the 30th anniversary of the death of the German teenager Hartmut Tautz who was killed trying to flee from communist Europe to the West. Tautz, who wasn't allowed to study at University back home travelled 700 kilometres from East-Germany down to Bratislava where he planned to cross into Austria. While trying to cross the border he was attacked by specially trained dogs belonging to the border guards. According to an investigation, he did not suffer terminal injuries initially but died due to border patrols denying him medical assistance. Aside from Tautz the memorial remembers dozens of other victims who lost their lives trying escape from communist countries.
