Fruit harvest to be halved this year

Slovak fruit growers will only harvest 25,000 tons of temperate climate fruit this year due to intensive April frosts, claims the Slovak Agriculture and Food Chamber. Apart from spring frosts, half of the harvest's losses can also be ascribed to cold winds and a lower volume of rainfall in the spring. The lowest level of domestic production was recorded for apples, pears, plums and peaches. The shortfall of fruits will have to be made up through imports. This will have a negative impact on the foreign trade deficit in farm commodities. Most of the fruits are to be imported from Poland which wasn't hit by the spring frosts.
