Pregnant women should reconsider whether visiting the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro is completely necessary, warns the Slovak Foreign Ministry, with the games to commence on Friday (August 5). The risk of infection by the Zika virus was given as the primary reason for the warning towards pregnant women, however all Slovak visitors are advised to be cautious. The mosquito-borne virus is mostly being spread in the Northern parts of Brazil, with the Slovak public health authority recommending the use of repellents with at least 30% percent of the active ingredient DEET. If sunscreen and repellent are used at the same time, the sunscreen should be applied first, then the repellent. Moreover, clothes of bright colours covering most parts of the body are recommended. The virus can also be transmitted by sexual intercourse and blood transfusions. In reaction to the situation regarding the Zika virus, some athletes, including Slovak number one tennis player Martin Kližan, have decided not to compete at these Olympic Games.
