Sales of firearms in Slovakia have risen by around 20% year-on-year, reported TASR. According to arms expert and seller Lukáš Hrnčiarik, there are several factors at play. Firstly, long term gun owners are seeking to buy newer models of firearms. Secondly, an increase of the new firearm license holders has occurred after the recent emergence of more shooting ranges. Thirdly, the deteriorating security situation in the EU has spurred homeowners to wish to defend themselves against a perceived increase in the risk of attacks. However, protection from immigrants or possible terror attacks weren't the only reasons provided; a rise in the number of robberies in satellite towns near large cities has been the greatest driving factor. However, "the relevant authorities don't provide detailed information on such crimes committed by our fellow countrymen," concluded Hrnčiarik.
