Backing of the Rainbow Pride march sparks disputes

The Ministry of Foreign affairs had to respond to criticism coming from the Speaker of Parliament and Slovak national party leader Andrej Danko regarding the ministry's backing of the Rainbow Pride march in Bratislava. The ministry's statement reads that one of the goals of Slovakia's Presidency of the EU Council is to support the fundamental values that feature respect for human rights and the rights of minorities. Therefore the Pride march was one of the 110 events backed by the ministry during the presidency.

Andrej Danko, as well as Prime Minister Robert Fico, also criticized the initiative of Slovak Ambassador to Hungary Rastislav Káčer, who displayed a rainbow flag over the Slovak Embassy building during the LGBTI festival in Budapest earlier in July. The ministry's statement reads that the embassy followed the actions of 30 other embassies in Budapest, and didn't consult the decision with the ministry. Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák spoke about this matter with the ambassador and considers this case closed.
