This Sunday, Slovakia will celebrate the 24th anniversary of the Declaration of Slovak sovereignty. After the Velvet Revolution in 1989, discussions regarding the shape of Czechoslovakia were opened. In Slovakia, there were increasing calls for more independence from the central authorities in Prague. As a result, the Slovak National Council adopted the Declaration on the Sovereignty of the Slovak Republic on 17th July 1992. A few weeks later on September 1, the constitution of the Slovak Republic was approved by the Slovak National Council. On January 1, 1993, Slovakia became an independent country.
