Slovakia adjusts its Farmland ownership law to EU’s regulations

Slovakia has backed down in its dispute with Brussels regarding the law on farmland ownership and will adjust it to fall within the EU's Common Agricultural Policy. The European commission claims the current Slovak legislation is discriminatory. The law presently includes the requirement of having permanent Slovak residence, which can restrict foreigners from buying land in Slovakia. This exception was imposed by the ex-Agriculture Minister Ľubomír Jahnátek two years ago, not wanting Slovak land to be owned by foreigners.
