Fewer short-term Slovak migrants in Britain

The argument for Brexit which states that the number of foreign workers, including Slovaks, in Britain is rising is incorrect. Ivan Chrappa, head of the labour and education statistics department at the Slovak Statistics Office stated this on TABLET.TV on Thursday. Over the past few years the number of short-term Slovak workers in Britain has been decreasing. "There are approximately 8,000 Slovaks working on a short-term basis in Great Britain. Their number has dropped by around 3,000 over the past few years," infromed Ivan Chrappa. He added that they've probably started to prefer Austria and Germany. It's due to their proximity, high living standards and plenty of job opportunities. Economic migration among Slovaks has been gradually rising since the final quarter of 2014, reaching 160,000 Slovaks currently working abroad short-term. One of the reasons for migration among Slovaks is the discrepancy between supply and demand on the labour market. The highest number of economic migrants comes from the Prešov region in eastern Slovakia. "This [migration] helps districts with high levels of unemployed people, employing young graduates and keeping long-term unemployment down," added the head of the labour and education statistics department at the Slovak Statistics Office. Most of Slovaks abroad work in the construction, industrial, service and health-care sectors.
